Welcome!
If you are here, you are probably interested in finding a way to help the people in your community, as well as to find a group of women to fellowship with on a regular basis.
My name is Amy Peare, and I have wanted to be part of a Dorcas Society since I first heard about them, in my teens.
The first Dorcas Society was formed on the Isle of Man after a cholera outbreak. The clothing and bedding of the poor had to be destroyed to prevent the spread of the disease, and so the women of the island came together to work, with Tabitha (Dorcas) of the Bible as their example and inspiration, to make clothing for the poor.
The idea caught on in other countries as well.
The towns I lived in when I was born and growing up have an active Dorcas Society that was formed by the famous children's author, Kate Douglas Wiggin. This is the Hollis/Buxton Maine Dorcas Society- http://www.dorcassocietymaine.org/about.html
Currently the Upstate S.C. Dorcas Society consists of two people- my daughter and myself. We would love to see the group grow!
There are many opportunities to serve, whatever your talents or interests are. Sewing, knitting, crocheting, gardening, cooking, organizing, speaking, advocacy- the possiblities are endless!
We want to keep money out of this as much as possible. There are no dues or fees to join at this time. Each member who joins will provide their own materials to make donateable items from. If classes are offered by members to teach new skills to the group, they will be provided for free, unless we decide as a group to take an out-of-group class together, and then each member will be expected to pay their own fees. Classes would be totally optional.
Since this group is still in formation, meeting times have not yet been established.
This is a Christian, religious society. We hope to keep this on a non-denominational basis, and prayer and Bible Study will be part of each meeting.
If you wish to join, please email me at aepeare@gmail.com
I look forward to hearing from you all!
